故宫铜缸名为“吉祥缸”的盛水容器直径和高度都超过1米，青铜材质的故宫铜缸重量至少6000斤，容量也可以达到数千升。

夏季，由于气温高，水分蒸发速度快，每天都会有数十名太监专门负责往“吉祥缸”内加水、换水，保证水容量充足没有异味；

冬季，为了防止气温低结冰，从每年的农历10月起至次年3月止，除了保证水量充足外，太监和杂役们还会给吉祥缸加盖、套上棉套，同时在水缸下放上引燃的木炭，保证缸里的水不结冰，时刻处于可用状态。

清朝入关之后，在明朝的基础上进一步增加了“吉祥缸”的数量，到清末，故宫内的“吉祥缸”数量已经超过300口。并从内务府仅有的30名内管领太监中抽出一人专门负责照看吉祥缸。
